Mechanical Design - Lead Engineer

Due to this success and significant sustained growth, the business, which is part of an Employee Ownership Trust, is now recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join its successful team.
The Role

To design and oversee special purpose machine projects from order acceptance to customer hand over

To be responsible for the design and detailing of projects
-
To communicate effectively to customers, suppliers and team members
-
To be responsible for the successful delivery of each projects
-
To be part of a team dedicated to delivering projects to plan and to budget
Key Tasks
-
To attend sales hand over meetings and commit to an overall project plan and budget
-
To perform mechanical design and detailing functions for projects allocated to you using 3D CAD within the time allocated in the project plan

To arrange Design Reviews during design to ensure design is well executed, meets overall requirements, designed for assembly, robust & reliable operation, is designed to meet or better budget, minimise any development issues, etc

To obtain a Design Pass Off by the customer on time and to project plan

To ensure Design Bill of Materials are produced on time and within budget
-
To negotiate with external suppliers and obtain the most cost-efficient materials in line with project budgets and time plans
-
To assist the electrical design process by communicating clearly and effectively through the duration of the project and especially through the mechanical design phase
-
To compile a build folder and communicate build details to machine tool fitters to ensure an efficient build process
-
To give direction and support to fitters / electricians / engineers as required

To visit customer sites as appropriate to fully understand customer requirements and to document and communicate all such requirements to the customer and internal staff.

To assess and improve design concepts along with a team at sales quotation stage to reduce risks, costs, lead times

To visit customer sites to obtain measurements for all dimensions, drawings, site layouts, sample products and all other considerations required for the design to be conducted accurately and to project

To identify key risks and help compile a plan for trials to reduce the risks

To obtain all the parts and samples and drawings necessary in advance to ensure these can be checked and used through the design phase

To check design work produced by other designers to ensure accuracy of design work as stipulated in ATM’s procedures

To conduct project reviews with customers (either at customer site or at ATM) on a periodic basis as agreed with the customer, documenting all issues and reporting on the status of each project

To construct and maintain a comprehensive Technical Construction File (TCF) which includes manuals, risk assessments, mechanical parts list and drawings
-
To carry out machine risk assessments during the design phase to ensure we meet the requirements of the Machinery Directives.

To lead projects during the development and installation phases of the project with pro-active and timely delivery of “problem fixes”

To obtain and act upon daily site reports provided by installation engineers to ensure problems are resolved as quickly as possible and provide full support to engineers on site

To ensure above all that all health and safety rules, guidelines and policies are understood and adhered to both at ATM, during travel and on site and to train team members accordingly

To assist and manage resolution of problems identified by customers as warranty calls and breakdowns

To continuously review the functionality of the machine design and give technical input where appropriate.

To recommend and implement improvements to practices and processes within ATM. To assist in team value engineering and troubleshooting activities.

To operate and enforce safe working practices within ATM

To carry out any other reasonable duties whilst at all times operating within the company’s policies and procedures.
Candidate Profile
-
Competence in mechanical design, robotics, automation, design of mechanical mechanisms and pneumatic systems would be an advantage:
-
Degree qualified/HNC/HND or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline
-
Minimum 7-10 years’ experience in mechanical design role ideally related to automation machinery.

Expert user of 3D parametric CAD package, ideally Solid-edge however use of Solid-works, Inventor, Creo etc would also be considered
-
Demonstrate a proven track record of successfully delivering mechanical design projects to required timescale and budget

Knowledge and understanding of the various national and international standards for machine design and machine safety systems and requirements to CE mark machine systems

Must be self-motivating with a positive “can do” approach to problem solving
-
Be commercially aware of the actions and responsibilities of your role when dealing with customers

Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal
-
Demonstrate a track record of being part of a multi-disciplined team to solving problems
-
Desire to combine practical application with a theoretical approach
-
Prepared to travel within the UK and overseas where necessary
